Ending Child Slavery in Ghana

In Ghana, Africa, roughly 20,000 children are trapped in child labor trafficking, forced to fish over 12 hours a day. These children come from poor families who, in financial desperation, sold their child to a fisherman in hopes that the child could live another day. Sadly, many of the fishermen were once trafficked children themselves.

11 years ago, we started addressing the issue of child labor trafficking in a brand new way…and it’s working.

Here’s how we create sustainable change that disrupts and
redirects the cycle of poverty.

Here at Mercy Project, we form village partnerships with the fishermen trafficking the children to literally teach a better way to fish that makes them more money and replaces the need for child labor. This allows the children to be voluntarily released and reunited with their families! Over the last decade, more than 200 children have gone home to live with their families!

Thanks to our Mercy Project supporters, over 75% of these children have the financial support they need to overcome the impacts of poverty and their time spent in trafficking. Our small, but mighty team of Ghanaian staff is creating REAL generational transformation in Ghana. And you can too.
